Developmental disabilities CASE Classroom
at The Green Meadow Elementary School

Student Population

The Green Meadow Elementary School Class in Maynard, Massachusetts, serves
6 to 9 year old cognitively delayed students who either (1) fall on the PDD/Autism spectrum or (2) otherwise require many of the same instructional strategies that children on the spectrum require.

These include:

• structured teaching approach (incorporating elements of ABA, “TEACCH,” or similarly proven systems and   strategies)
• ample 1:1 instructional time
• heavy reliance on visuals and data collection
• summer programming maximizing continuity of methodology, and environment
• parent training and/or consultation

Program Description

Affiliations: Children in this class have supported mainstream opportunities at grade level within the Green Meadow School, individually constructed, per IEP.  The class also has an affiliation with the CASE Behavior Training Program, which may provide for a given student: support in the classroom, parent training, summer programming, parent or staff consultation, in-service to staff, or other related services.

Staff to Student Ratio: Between 1:1 and 1:2

Target Enrollment: 7 students

Therapy Services: Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Physical Therapy to be incorporated into the students’ programs, per IEP.

Behavioral Parameters:This class is equipped to address a wide range of behaviors, but behaviors that compromise staff or student safety or behaviors that make it difficult or impossible for other students in or near the classroom to learn are beyond the scope of the program.  Examples include persistent screaming or intense repeated aggression or self-injurious behavior.  Students will have, as a matter of routine, an Individual Behavior Management Plan, to be reviewed annually or as needed.

Teacher Qualifications: Certified special needs teacher trained and experienced in ABA, floor time, “TEACCH” and/or other “best practices” strategies and methodologies for working with children on the autism spectrum (or children similar to those on the spectrum).

Referral and Additional Information:  Children are referred to the CASE program at Green Meadow Elementary School by their local school system special education office.  Enrollment requires parent/sending district/CASE Collaborative agreement that a student’s needs can be met in the program.  Students leaving this program might transition to the CASE program at Hanscom Middle School in Bedford or the CASE class at Russell Street Elementary School in Littleton.
